Chinese culture is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest treasures. Dating back thousands of years, it has been the subject of fascination for people all over the world. Even today, for westerners, Chinese culture remains deeply wrapped in mystery. It’s not easy for foreigners to understand a way of life, values, and principles that are so different from what they know. It’s a culture like none other on which dynasty after dynasty left its mark, enriching it through the ages. So let’s get lost for a short while in China’s mesmerizing realm.

Confucianism is at the core of Chinese culture

The Chinese way of life is greatly influenced by Confucianism, a philosophy, social ethic, and religious system that has guided Chinese people for over 2000 years. Although Taoism and Buddhism are also dominant ideologies that have shaped Chinese mentality, Confucianism remains the prevailing philosophy and the primary source of values for the vast majority of the population. It promotes profound respect for social hierarchy, family, education, and nurturing an atmosphere of harmony and peace.

Dance is more than an art form

China’s rich cultural heritage is nothing short of impressive. The Chinese have thrived in all domains, from architecture and literature to music or martial arts. But dance is one cultural element whose complexity makes it stand out from the rest. All dynasties have contributed to its enrichment, transforming and refining the dance form until it became a reflection of China’s culture. Classical Chinese dance can be considered the essence of Chinese history and traditions. Today, dance and music companies such as Shen Yun Performing Arts carry these valuable cultural treasures further, teaching the world about China’s magnificent past and fascinating lifestyle.

Chinese calligraphy is a highly admired artistic expression

In China, writing has gone beyond its practical purpose and transformed into an art form. Visual elements and literal meaning combine into a unique way of expression. Calligraphy is hugely appreciated by the Chinese, as it seems to be more important than painting or sculpture. It’s more than a form of decorative art, having both visual and intellectual attributes. Oracle bone scripts, seal carvings, or ink stones stand proof of the importance of calligraphy in Chinese culture.

China is a melting pot for different ethnic groups

It’s easy for those who don’t know much about Chinese culture to assume that Chinese are all the same, but they can’t be further from the truth. China is a real melting pot, having 56 ethnic groups, making for a diverse and colorful culture. Amongst these ethnic groups, the Han Chinese are the most numerous. Still, minorities have maintained their identities by preserving their languages and traditions, and it’s this blend of different cultures that gives China its unique character. It’s also important to mention that while all these minorities have their particularities, they have learned to live together in harmony, as equality and unity are essential values for the Chinese population.
