How to Make Your Laundry Routine More Energy Efficient

No one enjoys doing laundry, and it doesn’t help that washing machines and tumble dryers are among some of the most costly appliances to operate.

While running the washing machine or tumble dryer may not be as energy wasteful, or expensive, as it used to be, there are still plenty of ways to save energy when it comes to your laundry routine.

That’s why, in collaboration with Joe Graham & Son Ltd, leading suppliers of Tumble Dryers in Harpenden, we’ve collected some of our leading tips on saving energy in your laundry routine. Make sure to read below to find out more.

Wear Your Clothes More than Once

Of course, this doesn’t stand for every piece of clothing, but this can be one of the simplest ways to cut back on your laundry routine’s environmental impact.

Wearing your clothes more than once before you put them in the washing pile can be a great, and very easy, first step to make.

In fact, the United Nations Environment Programme even crunched the numbers for us and found that wearing your jeans at least three times between washes, washing them in cold water, and skipping the dryer could save up to five times more energy!

Wash More Clothes by Hand

Whilst washing your clothes by hand can be time-consuming, it will give you a good sense of the amount of laundry you go through on a weekly basis. In fact, doing hand washing may surprise you, simply on the basis of how many clothes you wear!

Air Dry Your Clothes Where You Can

Of course, this may depend on your circumstances and is very weather-dependent. However, if it is pouring down outside or you don’t have anywhere to hang clothes, you might have to rely on your tumble dryer.

If you can hang up your clothes, whilst it may take them that bit longer to dry, you won’t be using any energy!

Invest in Newer, More Energy Efficient Laundry Appliances

If you have an ancient laundry appliance, whilst it may still be working, it very likely has an abysmal energy efficiency rating! This is why it might be worth looking into purchasing a new appliance.

Nowadays, all washing machines sold in the UK will be rated A and above, to ensure that they are sustainable and energy-efficient. Whilst they may seem more expensive at first because of this, they will, without fail, be much kinder on your electricity bills as well as to the planet.

Try Cooler Washes

If you regularly wash your laundry at a very high temperature, try turning it down to 30c and see if it makes a difference. It’s likely that you won’t notice a difference in the cleanliness of your clothes and a much smaller energy bill.

If you do find that your clothes aren’t as clean as you like, we suggest that you next try switching your detergent, as biological detergents tend to have much stronger results at low temperatures.

There you have it, a few quick and simple eco-friendly ways to help make your laundry routine that bit more energy efficient. With a few small changes, before you know you could be seeing some impressive results both in your bills and the cleanliness of your clothes.
