Cylinder or upright? Which vacuum cleaner is best for me

Which type of vacuum cleaner is best for your home? Is it an upright or a cylinder machine? There are many considerations to take into account when you're trying to decide which one will work best for you. The article below discusses the pros and cons of both types, and what factors may influence your decision.

There are several factors you should consider when buying a vacuum cleaner. These include: How often will it be used? What type of flooring do you have? Will it need to fit into an awkward space or room with limited access points (like under the sofa)? Is more power important, even if this means more weight and size for your vacuum cleaner of choice?

The cylinder vacuum cleaner (like the iconic Henry) is great. Cylinder vacuum cleaners are perfect for low-pile carpeting. However, they are more difficult to manoeuvre than an upright vacuum cleaner and can be tiring for the user if used on higher pile carpets or uneven surfaces (like shag carpet).

On the other hand, uprights like newer Dyson models have excellent suction power which makes them good at removing dirt from high-pile carpeting. They are also great at getting into corners and edges where dirt accumulates, but they can be difficult to manoeuvre around furniture legs or other obstacles that may get in the way of a more flat-shaped design like a cylinder vacuum cleaner (like a Shark).

An upright vacuum cleaner will give you more power but may be more difficult to manoeuvre. A cylinder vacuum cleaner will have a smaller footprint, but less power than an upright alternative. Why is this? Cylinder cleaners are "non-self-propelled" meaning they don't have a motor that automatically drives the cleaner across your carpet. You must manually push it along, which means you will tire more quickly than with an upright vacuum cleaner.

Both models have two different options: one for carpeted surfaces and one for hardwood floors. Both of them are good for you, but it depends on which one will work best.

So, which one should you choose? This really depends on two things, firstly how often you will be using your vacuum cleaner and the area you need to vacuum. For instance, if space is at a premium a smaller cylindrical vacuum cleaner will be easy to store. Cylinders are also a really good idea if you have some awkward spaces to clean around and if you live in a small to a medium-sized house or flat.

Pick an upright if you want more power, even if it means you might need to push the vacuum cleaner along yourself. This is normally a good choice for larger homes or houses with mainly carpeted floors.

So, before you decide which one to buy, take a good look at your space and the type of surface that needs cleaning. There are a huge variety of vacuum cleaners on the market and the choice can often be bewildering. Many of us will make our electrical product choices based on our budget rather than just shopping on cost. It might make sense to think about what you need from a vacuum cleaner both now and in the future.
