How to care for painted uPVC surfaces

Compared to other painted surfaces like wood, painted uPVC surfaces are incredibly durable and therefore require very little care and maintenance. However, to further prolong their lifespan and have them always looking their best, we’ve come up with a few useful tips you can use to care for your painted uPVC surfaces.

Removing film from traffic

This is especially important if your house is close to a very busy road. Chances are, your uPVC windows and doors will collect layers of traffic film, and this can dull the finish of your painted uPVC. To remove traffic film effectively, you will need a non-caustic traffic film remover. Those types designed for car paint are recommended as they have the right ingredients to clean the film without ruining the paint job beneath it.

There are different types of traffic film removers available in the market, just add some to a bucket of warm tap water and apply it to the painted uPVC surface using a sponge. Allow the suds to stay for 5 minutes, sponge it and rinse off. This will leave your painted uPVC surface looking as good as new.

Consider uPVC spray painting

If your painted uPVC surface still looks dull and faded after cleaning, then you might want to consider getting it spray painted to rejuvenate its appearance. uPVC spray painting will not only transform the look of your uPVC surface, but the specially formulated paints used will protect the surface from peeling and cracking no matter the weather condition. PBM Paints offers a bespoke uPVC spray painters service that can give your property a 10 year guaranteed finish and at a very affordable rate.

Cleaning off dirt and grubbiness

You can remove all dirt and grubbiness from your painted uPVC by using a soft telescopic pressure washer. If you don’t have a telescopic washer, you can use a soft sponge and detergent (car shampoo also works) to whip up the dirt so you can wipe it away from the surface. The detergent you use should be PH neutral, and it is very important that you do not allow it to sit on the painted uPVC surface for a long time (max 5 minutes). Sponge gently with your hands and rinse away the suds thoroughly. You can repeat the process if necessary.

Cleaning off birdlime

Birdlime is acidic, and when it is not immediately removed, it can ruin the paint of your uPVC surfaces. To remove bird lime, place a wet towel/tissue over it and allow it to wet the soiling. Once wet, proceed to lift the soiling away with the wet tissue. Another alternative is to use a birdlime neutraliser, specifically the type designed for cars.

Other tips to bear in mind

  • When cleaning painted uPVC surfaces, do not use a tough or hard brush as it could leave scratches. Opt for a smooth and soft brush or cloth.
  • While trying to get rid of grime and dirt, do not use scouring pads, as this can leave marks behind.
  • Do not attempt to re-paint or spray paint your painted uPVC yourself- leave it to the professionals as this is the best way to guarantee a professional-looking finish.

Conclusion

Even though uPVC requires very little maintenance, its painted surface can collect dirt and grime over time, so it’s important to take note of the above uPVC care tips. Taking care of painted uPVC surfaces is really easy, and with the right tools and technique, you will have them looking as good as new in no time.
