Did you know the average American moves 11 times in their life? Moving, in general, is hard, and out-of-state moving is a daunting feat. However, it can be a great start to a new journey.

If you are considering out of state moving or in the process of your move, keep reading. We are going to go over 5 tips to help you with your move.

1. Look into the New City

Moving to a new place where you don't know anyone and don't know the area can be scary. Before you move, research the city. Find places and activities that you want to do when you get there.

Going to local events and restaurants and even workout classes can help you meet people and get an idea of the town. If you are moving with children, research the neighborhoods and schools. Maybe you are moving for a job, so don't forget to map your commute to and from work.

2. Create a Checklist

One moving tip that may not seem important is creating a checklist. There are a lot of things to do before you move and writing them down is the best way to ensure everything is taken care of.

Write down everything that needs to get done and cross items off as you go. This will help ensure you don't forget anything.

3. Beware of Cost

There is no doubt that out of state moving is expensive. However, beware of small fees that can creep up on you such as packing materials.

If possible, pack your things yourself. Some moving companies offer packing services, but you could save money by doing it on your own.

Boxes and moving supplies, gas, and hotels are all things you'll probably have to spend money on depending on how far you are moving. Sometimes things don't always go as planned so set aside some extra money for unexpected expenses.

4. Don't Rush

If possible, don't rush your move. We know that sometimes you don't have a choice, but if you can give yourself adequate time to move this will be a lot less stressful.

You will also decrease the chances of forgetting something, such as disconnecting utilities. If moving out quickly is the only option, this great guide can help you.

5. Research Moving Companies

There are many moving companies out there, so take your time to find a quality one. This is an expense you don't want to cheap out on. They will be carrying all your possessions; you don't want to risk them getting lost, stolen, or broken.

If you haven't ever used a moving company, ask around and look at reviews online. Family and friends may have suggestions that you can look into. Get a few quotes too, if there's one that is significantly lower than the others that's probably a red flag.
