Do you have an upcoming flooring project and want to adopt Hardwood flooring? Are you aware of the procedure? It’s best to familiarize yourself with it to have an easy time. You also want to produce quality work free of errors that could affect the longevity of your flooring. This article will guide you through this process by giving you steps to take.

Before delving further into this insight, there are things you want to know. First, what’s hardwood flooring?

Its flooring is made of wood from hardwood trees like oak, mahogany, and ebony. As you adopt this flooring, ensure it’s in a space free of water and moisture exposure. Wood is sensitive to moisture and might warp or even rot should you fail to maintain it accordingly. Hardwood flooring is best for the living room, kitchen, and bedroom.

That said, here are the steps to take in installing hardwood flooring on your property:

  1. 1. Measure Your Floor

Measuring your floor is paramount before starting the project. It’ll help you to know the number of hardwood floors to purchase. Should you acquire too many, you’ll end up having waste which is a waste of finances. If you buy less, you’ll have to stop work midway to buy more, which might interfere with the quality of the final work.

Get the dimensions of the floor and indicate the figures. It’d also help to get the diagonal length, especially if you want to adopt patterns with the flooring. With the length and width, get the square footage of your floor. It’ll help you when making your purchase since most vendors sell hardwood flooring in square footage. When buying, add square footage to your floors to make room for any cuts or errors you’ll make. Southern Luxe flooring or your vendor of choice can assist you in getting the right square footage for your flooring.

2. Acquire The Necessary Tools

Your flooring project is quite handy, and you’ll need several tools to make it a success. Some of the tools you’ll need depend on your installation technique. For instance, should you opt to use the nailing technique, you’ll need nails and a hammer. You’ll need staples and a stapling machine if you choose to staple. For the adhesion technique, you’ll need glue to bond the flooring to your subfloor.

The other tools you need independent of your installation technique are a mallet, spacers, a hand saw, sandpaper, putty, and personal protective equipment (PPE). The PPEs you’ll need are eyewear to prevent chips from entering your eyes when cutting the hardwood flooring with the saw and a knee guard. This project requires excessive kneeling, which can cause injuries and tears in your muscles. The knee guards will protect you from injuries, even as they give you comfort and focus for the job.

3. Prepare The Subfloor

Your subfloor needs to be in perfect condition if your hardwood flooring is to last. It’s the surface on which you’ll place your flooring.

Start by removing any bumps on its surface. Should there be dents, fill them with the putty; these dents also include depressions formed due to nails on your subfloor. The aim is to have a flat surface. It’ll help to use a level or a flat piece of wood to ensure your subfloor is flat. Fill up the areas under the level using the putty.

If the volume to be filled is big, you can use concrete to fill it. Ensure the concrete cures before proceeding.

Next, clean the floor to remove any debris on the surface and sand it to achieve a smooth surface. The smooth surface will allow for proper adhesion of the hardwood flooring.

4. Lay Your Flooring

Once your floor is clean and flat, it’s time to lay your hardwood flooring. Consider planning the process before starting. It’d help to find the center of each wall and draw a line to the center of the room. Use the corners of each segment as your starting point, using full-length pieces. For a successful process, please start with the longest wall and end with the shortest wall. You want to minimize cutting as much as possible.

Please leave a few inches between your wall and the first hardwood flooring plank. It’ll allow the wooden floor to expand and contract depending on the room’s temperature. It's where you place the spacers to avoid losing those inches as you proceed with your installation.

Instead of nailing after laying each plank, first lay out the flooring and see the outcome. If everything is as you wish it to be, proceed to secure the planks in place using your preferred method, be it nailing, stapling, or gluing. As you do this, hit the planks with the mallet to ensure they lay flat. None of them should be higher than the other.

Conclusion

The discussion above has shown how easy it is to install hardwood flooring in your home. All you require is proper guidance, as this article provides. Therefore, implementing this guide is best for an easy and fast process.

If you encounter any installation issues, seek insight online or refer to the hardwood plank’s manufacturer manual. Most manufacturers will give instructions on inserting the flooring.
