If you are looking for a challenging and lucrative career, being a realtor might be an ideal choice. In the real estate profession, you'll be able to chart your own course and build your business and clients. There is plenty of flexibility, and a high ceiling where there are few limits on how successful you can be. As you develop your sales and inter-personal skills and build up your referrals and testimonials, you'll be able to grow your listings and make more sales.

When you choose to be a realtor, you are stepping into a career that requires strong skills in selling, working with customers, and building great ongoing relationships with brokers, other agents and professionals in the industry. Your marketing abilities will also play a big part in your success, as you develop sales lead referral programs and find ways to reach prospective buyers and sellers at exactly the right time.

Get Your College Degree

You will have to master many different business and professional skills if you want to be a good realtor. Although you may work for a specific real estate franchise or independent local office, you'll really be fully responsible for creating and running your own entrepreneurial venture. To be successful, you'll need strong skills in communications, finance, marketing, and business administration. Higher education costs have risen consistently over the years, so you'll want to make sure you come up with some creative ways to pay for your much-needed college degree. One of the best ways to get money for all or part of your degree program is to search for scholarships for college students. Once you find scholarship opportunities, you can apply for the programs that make sense for you.

Understand Your Local Market

To truly be able to serve your real estate customers and bring value to the transaction, you'll need to immerse yourself in and build up knowledge of your local market. At the very minimum, clients will want your guidance on the best school systems, up and coming neighborhoods, and home comps and valuation comparisons. Keeping your finger on the pulse of the market is important too. You'll want to have accurate information on current market trends, such as average days on the market and the latest selling prices. Being able to guide your clients to the best property options and choices in today's market is critical.

Build Relationships and a Lead System

Real estate success is often based on the relationships that you build and the referrals that you receive. Working with mortgage brokers or firms to get and work with pre-qualified buyer leads can mean you are tapped into a pipeline of ready to take action clients. As you build relationships with others in the industry, you'll also be strengthening your ability to serve your real estate clients. Often your clients will ask you for advice on what title company to use, which local company can originate their mortgage and which contractor would be best for the upgrades on their home. When you funnel business to these firms, they'll also return the favor and refer potential customers to you.

Develop Innovative Social Media Strategies

There are many fellow realtors in the marketplace. If you want to really stand out, you'll need to develop and execute innovative and effective social media campaigns for yourself. There's plenty of competition for eyeballs out there, so you need to come up with strategies that help you stand above the crowd. Many successful realtors have found that videos can be an effective way of getting your message out and letting your future clients get to know you. If future clients learn from your informative videos, and you are able to showcase your professionalism and your helpful personality, they'll be more inclined to give you the listing or select you as their buyer's agent.

Master Your Time Management Skills

There is no preset schedule when you are a realtor. Unlike much of the work in the everyday world, you don't have a 9 to 5 job and often the choice of what you focus on each hour is your own. Working to master time management and truly develop your skills in this area is critical to on-going success. You'll want to be sure to assign the right amount of time to all of your major marketing and sales activities, such as meetings with clients, appointment follow-ups, and lead generation. Fine tuning what you work on and how much time you give to each endeavor can result in a big advances in your career.
