Alaska, also known as the “Last Frontier” is a breathtaking region of stark natural beauty and diverse wildlife, not to be found anywhere else on the planet.

This last remaining vast tract of untamed wilderness also offers incredible wildlife encounters that attract nature lovers, photographers and adventure seekers alike.

Canada offers a fantastic way to experience close wildlife interactions by cruising right up to the Inside Passage which provides spectacular views of Alaska's striking glaciers and majestic wildlife cruising from Vancouver.

Enroute, cruise guests can spot humpback whales, orcas and even dolphins playing in the ship's wake. This engrossing sight of seeing creatures in their natural habitat acts as a perfect dose for what is in store ahead.

Grizzly Bears

Encountering grizzly bears in the wild can be both thrilling and humbling for any visitor to Alaska. The sight of these  powerful animals catching salmon mid-air,especially at Brooks Falls inside the Katmai National Park and Preserve is an awe-inspiring experience.

The park's vast expanse is also home to other wildlife such as caribou, wolves and Dell sheep, making it a must-visit destination for those interested in the wildlife of Alaska.

Marine Mammals

The waters of the Inside Passage are literally teeming with marine life and are a prime location for viewing wildlife, both from sea and from land.

Apart from humpback whales, which are seen breaching the surface of these waters from time to time, orcas or killer whales also make their appearance often and are easily recognisable with their distinct black and white markings.

In addition, other marine mammals which can be spotted here are harbor seals, sea lions and sea otters.

Birdwatching in Alaska

Alaska has a rich diversity of bird life with over 500 species having been recorded here, including many endemic species that are not to be found elsewhere in North America.

A common, but great sight are Bald Eagles, seen soaring over the country's rivers and coastlines with their impressive wingspan. Watching them swooping down from the sky to catch prey is a breathtaking site.

The Pribilof Islands, located in the Bering Sea, are a mecca for those birdwatchers interested in seabirds. Large colonies of puffins, auklets and murres can be seen here.

The puffins, in particular, with their colorful plumage and comical antics are a favorite with most visitors. The island also holds a  big colony of breeding northern seals, the largest of its kind in the world, adding an extra layer of interest to the intrepid birder.

Other Unique Wildlife

If you are willing to venture deeper into the Arctic region, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a critical habitat for some iconic animals such as the Porcupine caribou, alongwith with the predators like wolves and bears constantly on their tail.

Polar Bears, are without doubt, the top predators of Alaska and can often be seen on land during the summer months, mostly near the town of Kaktovik on the shores of the Beaufort Sea.

Responsible Viewing

While Alaska offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife encounters, approaching them with respect and responsibility is critical.

Many species are sensitive to human presence, so it is important to follow guidelines laid down for wildlife viewing.
