As someone who cherishes spending time outdoors, there nothing quite like enjoying a home cooked meal and taking a seat in your garden in the evening to enjoy it. Everyone is different, so whether you enjoy a simple breakfast in the garden on a weekend or a midweek BBQ, the key point is you need to create a cosy outdoor environment. If you can do this without breaking the bank then that’s a huge bonus. Living in Australia, the weather is pretty much perfect for spending time outdoors, so I have used my insight to provide you with some great tips for setting up a great place dine in your own backyard.

First and foremost, you need to know the space you are working with inside out. Whether you have a large backyard, a modest patio, or just a balcony, understanding the dimensions and layout is crucial. I remember struggling with space on my small balcony and I eventually opting for a compact bistro set which worked extremely well. These type of sets often come with foldable or stackable chairs, which are great because they can be folded up and put to the side to open up space for other uses (laundry drying).

When on a budget, it's wise to prioritise the essentials. A sturdy dining table and comfortable outdoor furniture seating are a must. Wicker furniture is a personal favourite because it blends seamlessly with natural surroundings and is relatively easy to maintain.

Talking of maintenance, make sure you go with weather-resistant furniture. Our climate in Australia can be unforgiving, intense sun, occasional heavy rain and in some places a colder winter. I’ve lost a fair share of cushions to unexpected showers and colour fading, so I can't stress enough the value of water-resistant and UV-protected materials.

If you want to create a bit of ambiance in the evening then you will need some lighting. I’ve experimented with different lighting over the years, from string lights to lanterns, and found that a little creativity goes a long way. Solar-powered lights are particularly budget-friendly and eco-conscious and they add a warm glow without additional electricity costs, and they’re easy to install around your dining area.

Decor can also enhance the cosiness of your outdoor space. I like to incorporate elements from my garden, such as small potted plants or a vase of fresh flowers as a centrepiece. This not only ties the space together aesthetically but also personalises it. Cushions and throws are another inexpensive way to add colour and comfort. Opt for weather-resistant fabrics to keep them looking fresh and vibrant despite the elements.

One aspect I’ve grown to appreciate is the versatility of outdoor storage solutions. Having storage within arm's reach keeps the area tidy and ensures that essentials like tablecloths or outdoor games are always handy. If you are more space it’s also a handy place to store things like cushions should it start to rain.

Dining outdoors, especially if you plan to do it regularly, should be as stress-free and as simple as possible. I enjoy prepping simple meals that celebrate fresh, local produce. A casual barbecue or a fresh salad with seasonal ingredients always hits the spot. It’s also a chance to get creative with table settings. Mixing and matching tableware adds a nice personal touch and is a fun way to express your style without having to buy totally new items.

To make a cosy outdoor dining experience on a budget, it all comes down to making smart choices, shopping around and not being afraid to get creative with what you already have. With Australia’s beautiful weather as a backdrop, even the most modest setup can become a cherished spot for family and friends to gather. Just remember, it’s not about how much you spend, its more about creating a comfortable space for you and your friends and family to enjoy the space.
