People today have far more choice about where to live than anyone else in history, and the options available to them extend far beyond the borders of the country where they were born. People seeking the best places to live out their dreams can look for them in many different countries around the world. Naturally, some countries have emerged as favourite spots for these expats living away from home. One of the most popular is Thailand.

There are certain destinations within the country where expats often settle, one of which is the southern island of Phuket. Immigration to the island has led to a boom in the regional property market, and this article is going to examine what makes it such a popular spot for foreigners to start their new lives.

The lifestyle

Many of the people who move to Thailand move because they love the laid-back lifestyle available there. The cost of living in Thailand is typically much lower than it is in larger economies, so there is no need for them to work as hard. And Phuket is a great place for those who enjoy a leisurely pace of life, as it is hot and sunny for most of the year and home to some of the world’s prettiest beaches.

The advantages also go beyond just not having to work so much. Those who already have money can significantly upgrade their living standards by moving there. In Phuket luxury villas with pools and ocean views are a lot more affordable than they are in other parts of the world.

The amenities

Phuket has a foreign resident population of between 30,000 and 100,000, and it is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This means that foreigners moving there don’t need to worry about missing out on their home comforts. There are numerous malls, supermarkets, and restaurants catering to many different nationalities. The island is also famous as a nightlife hotspot which offers a wide variety of entertainment options.

Rental opportunity

As we’ve mentioned, Phuket is enormously popular with tourists. If you are interested in buying property there but do not plan to live in it, it could easily be rented out either to long-term tenants or through a platform like AirBnB. Even a spare room could be an income opportunity.

Prices are rising

The fact that Phuket is an island makes it a seller’s market. There’s only a limited amount of room for new units to be built, yet demand keeps on going up and it looks likely to continue that way. In March 2024, the Thai government announced several infrastructure projects to help turn the region into an economic hub.

While making it harder to find bargains as a buyer, this does mean that if you buy a property you’re likely to be able to sell for a great price in the future.

Conclusion

Foreign property ownership in Thailand is not without its challenges, but places like Phuket have a lot going for them that can make it well worth the effort. From the leisurely lifestyle and beautiful beaches to strong demand from renters and buyers, it could be a great place to buy your next property.
