Designer Home Builders Can Help You To Provide A Safe Space For Your Pets

When we’re building a new home, we spend a lot of time researching and planning to ensure that the living space is perfect for our families. But do we ever stop to consider our pets? It’s important to remember that our furry friends also need a safe and comfortable space to call home. Fortunately, designer home builders can help you to create a pet-friendly design that makes every member of the family happy. We have outlined some of these options here:

▪    Friendly Floors
When choosing flooring for your home, it’s a good idea to pick ones that will be resilient, stain resistant and easy to clean – pets can be just as messy (if not more so) than your kids! Keeping your carpeted areas to a minimum is often recommended, as carpet can stain quite easily and is also known to trap pet hair. Whilst tiles are a popular option, it should be kept in mind that they can be a bit slippery for paws. If you do opt for tiles, you can keep your four-legged friend grounded by laying rugs and runners in high traffic areas.

▪    Lounging Around
Why not make a real statement with a stylish take on the ‘standard’ pet bed? Many people are now opting for built-in beds, which can often be hidden away when not in use. An example of this is the bottom drawer of a built-in cabinet being turned into your furry friend’s bed – simply add a purpose made mattress and you’re good to go. Another option is to invest in some beds that are a little more attractive than the old blanket or towel creation you’re currently using. Beanbags are becoming increasingly popular, particular in dark colours.

▪    Keeping Clean
Believe it or not, designer home builders will tell you that it is possible to maintain a clean and tidy house – even with pets! There are a number of ways that you can achieve this, such as investing in a ‘pet specific’ vacuum cleaner. These come with modified accessories, advanced filtration systems and extra suction power, meaning that they can handle all of that pet hair with ease. Other options include hanging a clothes brush just inside the door, so that you can clean yourself off quickly just before stepping out for the day.

▪    Poisonous Plants
Keep in mind that most pets enjoy spending the vast majority of their days roaming around outside. Because of this, it is important to be aware that some plants can be toxic to our pets. All parts of the plant – including the bulb, leaves and flowers – are poisonous, so it’s best to steer clear of them all together. These plants include: brunfelsia (the most dangerous for dogs), liliums (the most dangerous for cats), wandering jew, and stephanotis. You should also avoid oleander, leaving bulbs in the open, toadstools, and tomato or potato plants.

We hope that you’ve found the above tips useful in creating a home that is as much for your pets as it is for you. The next time you speak with your designer home builders, ensure that you mention you have pets. They will be able to make recommendations and suggestions that will ensure everyone is happy. Also don’t forget to mention what kind of pets you have – dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits or even birds – to ensure the design is suitable.
