Moving Big and Bulky Objects into Storage

Got an extra sofa that you can’t quite fit into your home just yet? Preparing for a baby’s room or moving baby furniture out? Self storage can be a big relief to families who need to move out items that are just taking up too much space at home! Whether on the long term or the short term, it’s good to get things out so that you have a bit more room to yourself. But how can you get all these things moved out?

Lighten the Load

When you move drawers and cabinet items, the best way to make them easier to move is to check inside! It might seem simpler to move everything without unpacking because everything is already set up when you place your item down, but every little gram or ounce counts! They can all add up to the final weight of the item and make things a lot more difficult to shift. Plus you don’t want to worry about things rattling around inside in case the piece of furniture needs to be rotated in order to make its way through the house!

Using Tools and Equipment

Pulleys can help to lower big items down the stair well or out the window if they are too big to fit through for frames, trolleys and dollies or a platform that has wheels can definitely make it easier on your back when you pull them through the house instead of carrying them too. Even placing the pivots on a rag to make the item more fluid when pushed over the floor can make a big difference! A myriad of items can make moving items into storage that much simpler if you use them!

Make Way!

With all the things that are going on and with people moving in and out of the house, keep all the door ways free and empty and make sure that there is a clear pathway from your stash of items to your transport vehicle. When you are unloading your items before moving to the self storage unit, it’s also a good idea to move the items to the back of the storage unit or to the wall as soon as possible so you have more space to move more things in.

Dismantle and Disassemble

Where possible, you should dismantle bigger items to smaller parts to facilitate moving them into storage. But while dis-assembly makes things less bulky, take care to keep them all in one place. Perhaps wrapping them up together, or putting them all into a box. Screws and nails should be placed in a sealable bag to be moved together with the big planks and portions so that you can quickly reassemble everything when things are taken out of storage in the future.
