Safety is paramount on a construction site, and if you are supervising, you will find yourself with responsibility for keeping others, not just yourself safe.  As a site supervisor you have both a legal and moral obligation to take reasonable steps to prevent any injuries to either yourself, or others working on the site.  The Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course is designed to teach you not just about site safety, but also about your obligations as a supervisor.

On a construction site, there are numerous potential hazards.  Aside from the occupational health angle, which needs to be considered whatever the job, there are also things such as demolition and debris, working at heights or in confined spaces, and the dangers of electricity and fire that need to be risk assessed.  The SSSTS course will cover all of these areas, allowing you to perform risk assessments and identify potential problems, whilst providing you with an understanding of why this is so important.

The SSSTS course takes place over two days, and can be taken at your convenience, either on a weekday or at the weekend.  The main focus of the SSSTS course is around risk assessments, as these are pivotal to performing your legal obligations around keeping everyone safe.  On a construction site where things are constantly changing, performing risk assessments is an ongoing challenge that you cannot afford to ignore, so it is vital to have the correct skills for identifying and minimising risks.

Although you will find yourself performing many a risk assessment as a site manager, it is often other people who have to put your findings into action.  As well as helping you perform risk assessments, the SSSTS course will also teach you how to effectively communicate your findings with your team, so that they work in the safest way possible.  As important as risk assessments are, they are only as useful as their implementation, so it is vital that you are able to communicate your findings with workers in a way that they will understand not only how to work safely, but also the reasons for being told to perform tasks in a certain way, even if this differs from the way they have worked in the past.

An SSSTS course can be undertaken by employees who have supervisory responsibilities on construction sites, as well as those looking to gain the qualification in order to advance their career.  Showing a knowledge of health and safety laws, above the basic health and safety in the workplace qualifications that you might already hold is a great way to make yourself look attractive to any potential employers.
