Required Materials

-          Exterior semi-gloss paint

-          Eggshell or exterior flat paint

-          Pressure washer

-          Paintbrush

-          Paint sprayer

-          Painter’s tape

-          Ladder

-          Drop cloths

-          Paint scraper

-          Epoxy filler

-          Stain-blocking primer

-          Spackle knife

-          Medium-grit sanding block

-          Plastic sheeting

-          Caulk gun

-          Exterior caulk

1.      Pressure-wash your home’s walls

To be sure of the best coverage, remove any dust and dirt buildup from the walls by using a pressure washer.

Tip: Work from top to bottom of your home in a controlled, smooth way, and overlap each pressure washer stroke by around eight inches to ensure full coverage.

2.      Repair any damaged surfaces

Have a walk around the perimeter of your home and take notes with respect to any damaged surfaces including damage to the wood, the masonry, the siding or stucco, and the metalwork. To the cracks and holes, make an application of epoxy filler using a spackle knife. When dry, lightly sand over it with a medium-grit sanding block.

3.      Remove any loose paint

When the exterior is dry, have a walk around the perimeter and take notes with respect to chipped or loose paintwork. Position drop cloths over the ground, then begin to remove the chipped/ loose paint by using a medium-grit sanding block or a paint scraper.

4.      Caulk the trim

If there are any gaps between the house and the trim around the windows and doors, fill them using a caulk gun which has been primed with exterior caulk. If your home is comprised of mixed materials like a siding and brick combination, add the caulk to the surface at the point that the materials meet.

5.      Prime the stains

Make an examination of the the exterior for any visible wood knots and stains. Where necessary, using a paintbrush, make an application of a single coat of stain-blocking primer.

6.      Protect windows, lights, and doors

Cover over the windows, the lighting fixtures, and the doors using painter’s tape with plastic sheeting draped over for protection.

7.      Paint the exterior

Load the paint sprayer with eggshell or flat exterior paint color. Apply either a single or two coats, depending on the hue’s intensity, to the entire home. Work from top to bottom making smooth, controlled strokes that overlap by around eight inches.

Tip: If you are changing the color of the exterior from dark to light or vice versa, you should ensure proper coverage by applying a coat of primer first. If you are applying a fresh coat of the color that’s already on the walls, primer application is unnecessary.
