Top Tips on Moving with Your Pets – What you should Remember

If you’ve ever moved from one home to another, you know what kind of hassle it can be. Mother and father are usually busy supervising everything, stress levels are high. Movers walk in and out, carrying valuables through narrow doorways and along tight corners. Children run around, often noisy or in the way. Still, it’s easy to communicate with humans and work together in an organised manner. With pets, it’s often not so – the poor pet probably has no idea what’s going on and may exhibit symptoms of stress or fear as well. It’s important to handle a move with pets the right way. Here are some tips on moving with your pets – and what you should remember.

What to do before the move

  • Some animals may become anxious or annoyed when they see you pack things; they don’t understand what’s going on. Leave them in a familiar room and, if possible, with company.
  • Pack your pet’s items last – your pet’s toys are usually easy to pack anyway. Don’t wash any of their items until well after the move so their scent remains in them.
  • Unless you feel safe driving with your pet in the back seat, train your pet to get used to a travel crate, which may be better for long distances.

What to do during the move

  • If you have a long journey ahead of you with your pet, make sure you bring food and snacks and plenty of water. Don’t forget to stop regularly for your pet’s bowel movements.
  • Your trip needs to be safe, above all, so transporting your pet in a crate or harness in the back seat is always a preferred option.

What to do after the move

  • Check all fences, doors, and windows to make sure your pet can’t escape.
  • Put your pet in a room where they are safe whilst the movers carry everything inside. If at all possible, let your furry friend observe them – they are happy to recognise familiar objects.
  • Unpack your pet’s toys first and place them in a safe area. The old, familiar smell will calm them down.
  • Walk the neighbourhood often so your pet gets a sense of their new environment quickly. Continue feeding at regular times.

Remember, you pet is an innocent bystander who doesn’t understand what all the commotion is about. Having a plan will help you manage your pet and the move with your pet much easier. Always keep in mind that safety should come first, and doing as much as possible to increase the comfort level of your pet will not just make it easier on your furry friend, but on yourself and your family as well. As removals Gloucester professionals like Advanced Removals & Storage would always say: Travel safely!
