Decorating Your Home with Vases Decorating Your Home with Vases

Vases are unfortunately one of the most underused types of ornamental objects that can decorate a home. Yes, it’s a type of container for flowers but it can be more than that. A vase can complement or emphasize the overall interior of your home. It can highlight rare species of flowers gracing your room. It can even be the sole decorative highlight of a room with the right design. But before you can enjoy all that, you need to know what to look for when you go vase shopping.

Materials

Don’t limit yourself to crystal glass vases just because you want something traditional or elegant. There are so many more types of materials to choose from as well, including but not limited to metal, wood, clay or ceramic, stone, plastic, and porcelain.

Style

A bud vase is considered the simplest of all vase styles. It’s characterized by its small opening and frequently transparent body. You can use all kinds of floral arrangements for this type of vase. You can also decorate your living room by this type vase with gorgeous furniture like accent chairs or bean bag chairs. However, you can also opt for other designs; just remember to match it with the type of flowers or floral arrangement you’d be using it with.

Vase style varies in numerous ways.

Size and height – Most people are used to seeing vases that are more or less 12 inches or one foot in height and placed on tabletops. However, there is also what you’d call a floor vase, which can be as tall as your average adult. That type of vase obviously can’t be used with flowers. Rather, it would work as a decorative object all on its own.

Shape – A vase does not always come with a narrow opening and a wider, hourglass-shaped body. It can also have corners and edges or shaped like bowls. The important thing to remember is to keep your floral arrangements relevant or complementary with the shape of its vase. A square-shaped vase is unusual itself, for instance, and as such it would be better paired with simpler flowers like daisies and roses.

Color – A vase does not have to be transparent all the time. Even glass vases can come with colored bodies. Again, you need to keep in mind that the color of your vase would have to be complementary to your floral arrangements. A green vase would probably make a bad “home” for orange-colored flowers. In any case, you can always refer to a color palette to avoid being accused of color blindness by your guests.

Content

A vase does not always have to contain flowers either. Did that come as a shock to you? If it did, then you are in for a greater surprise. You see, a vase nowadays can be used to contain a wider range of things. Some use a vase for containing ferns and weeds. Others, however, use an assortment of potpourri or small and pretty knick-knacks to fill up a vase. These can include but are definitely limited to colored stones or pebbles, shells, crystals and gems. Basically, it’s all up to you to determine what you want your vases to display!
