TYPES OF COATING FOR YOUR FLOOR PROJECTS

Time does not slow down for anyone or anything, especially new floor projects. It is also important to get the best product for your dollar in any improvement project, this durability helping you and the environment.

Two types of coating that can be compared using these standards include the classic Epoxy and the new polyurea polyaspartic SunOne, both offered by Sundek based in Orange County.

Beginning with the Epoxy in this comparison, Epoxy is the classic coating used by flooring companies. It is used commercially and recreationally, such as in the home or the school locker room. It is used to coat garages, warehouses, kitchens and basements.

Epoxy is available in many different variances of color depending on the aesthetic desired by the customer. These colors are displayed either through acrylic chips or quartz beads that are laid out after the first base coat, and then covered by primer before the coating finally sets.

The process for laying epoxy is quiet simple, but takes a good amount of time. It begins with the grinding of the concrete surface in order to get all the dirt and air so the base coat as a clean, even surface once application begins. The base coat is brushed on to the concrete, followed by the chips or the beads desired. Once this sets, the topcoat, or the primer, is applied to set the color and finish off the process.

Since Epoxy is so sensitive and can ware down quickly, it is recommended to apply a top coating, such as a sacrificial coat that can handle all the possible scratches and discoloring in the future. This application makes the process even longer and requires a higher cost, especially if a wax is applied on top of this.

The application can take up to 24 hours before it is finished and requires 4-5 days to set before regular usage is applicable.

Depending on the traffic of the floor and the thickness of coating (this ranging from 4-14 mm), the management and replacement of the floor will occur rapidly, especially for commercial usage such as garages and warehouses.

So, how does Polyurea polyaspartic coating compare to all of this information?

In essence, this coating has a lot of the same characteristics and usages of Epoxy, but is stands as a replacement for the older coating process.

SunOne is more durable and more economical than epoxy, and it is the more ecological choice. It is a more commercially durable product, this meaning it lasts longer, even with high-traffic flooring.

How durable is durable?

Polyspartic was initially reserved for bridge repair because of it’s staggeringly strong chemical make up and it’s ability to set very quickly in order to keep traffic running normally.

Now, this technology has been made available to the commercial public and can be utilized in home, business and other outdoor recreation improvement projects.

Just like Epoxy, SunOne coating can be used for garages, basements, kitchens, offices, and basements, and the coloring process is also the same.

But, what sets SunOne apart from Epoxy is the application process, this being the secret behinds its durability.

Installation includes diamond cutting blade grinders attached to a vacuum. The importance of this machine anatomy is that it makes the concert surface at 95 percent free of dust, air and even oil, this making the laying process much easier as well as creating a cleaner, more smooth final product.

After the grinding, the first layer is applied, this base being the polyspoartic, followed by the later of chips or beads desired. Once this layer has set, a layer of SunOne is applied to lock in the chips and let them set into place. Then, once this main layer is set, the last layer, otherwise known as the primer, is laid on top to finish off the process.

What sets this apart from Epoxy is the fact that SunOne is stronger, and the entire process is used with this chemical compound, thus making the entire floor extremely durable because of the 100 percent usage of the polyspartic product.

In comparison to epoxy, the time it takes the polyspartic product to set is much shorter, almost half. The application process can take just as long, simply because of all the layers involved. But, the set time is 4-6 hours for SunOne rather than the 24 for the Epoxy.

The durability of this product is based on the usage, but regular maintenance is not necessarily required. SunOne is UV, stain and scratch resistant, meaning that a wax layer is not necessary. The thickness of the coating is 10-12 mm thick, most of this being the layer of pure polyspartic product between the base and the primer.

A huge benefit of SunOne is the ability for the chemicals to set in warm weather. It has a temperature set range between 20 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit, making is an easy process for the year-round warm temperatures in Orange County, making any time an optimal time for a new flooring project.

Finally, in the long run, a polyspartic product is more ecofriendly because of the higher durability compared to epoxy, this meaning replacement, either with concrete or other floor coatings, does not have to take place near as often. There is less trash going out and more time to actually sue the product, instead of always having to take the time to upgrade and remodel.

With this comparison, it is easy to understand that the SunOne option offered by Sundek is the better option if you are looking to begin a new floor project. The timeliness and the savings speak for themselves when it comes to making the final decision.
