4 Ways to Use Home Automation for Major Home Systems

Written by Posted On Wednesday, 08 June 2016 15:15

Home automation is another term for the integration of smart technology within your home. While most use automation for lighting and conveniently operating some home appliances, there are dozens of other ways to incorporate automation into major home systems like HVAC and home security systems.

Increased Efficiency

When you consider using home automation to manage major home systems, like the heating and cooling system, you are able to control temperatures, adjust temperatures from outside of the home, and see exactly what time a temperature was manually changed. Some advanced systems allow users to stop a temperature change via notification.

One of the systems of heightened importance in terms of efficiency to worry about is the HVAC system. The average HVAC system cost for a single family home hovers around $3,000, so maintaining the efficiency and controlling how hard the system runs will help you make that system last longer and work more evenly in your home.

Constant Monitoring

When you have smart technology installed in your home, you can add a lot of convenience to your life. Lights can be scheduled to be turned on and/or off at a specific time or to be triggered by motion. You can also do simple tasks like turn the stove/oven on or start a pot of coffee while you’re still in bed. The conveniences reduce stress from your life as the functionality of your automation system and the home systems the program is connected to are constantly monitored.

Safety While Away

Home security systems also can be automated, as most are already monitored off-site. These security systems often have mobile applications that homeowners can access at any time to ensure that the doors and windows are locked. Some provide video recording technology so that parents can keep an eye on children, baby sitters and pets while away from home. Noticing when something is not right allows homeowners to immediately contact local police or, in some cases, trigger their own alarm to scare off potential intruders. This type of automation is nearly a must for families with small children in busy neighborhoods.

Notification Systems

Home automation systems can send notifications from an appliance or system to your cell phone. While this may seem too advanced for many homeowners, the ability to receive a text message of an item needed, improperly working system or major issue can be rather convenient. Technology in home automation is advancing, even to the point where touchscreen mirrors are in development phases. Advanced notification systems within home automation networks can make homes safer overall.

Bottom Line

While home automation may not seem practical for all families, smart technology can actually save you money in the long run. When you are able to program your HVAC system from anywhere in the world to make your home efficient and comfortable, it is easy to see the benefit of smart technology. An HVAC company in-combination with an automation expert, should work together to ensure that all of the programming between the two systems is cohesive.
