Cooling Your Home with Perfect AC System

Cooling Your Heels…and Your Toes…and Your Elbows

Summer weather is here, and odds are it’s going to be a scorcher for most of the U.S. At least that what the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is predicting. That means now is the perfect time to get your air conditioner a tune-up.

Staying ahead of the curve

It doesn’t take a world-renowned detective to understand that preventive maintenance can significantly reduce the probability, and the cost, of future breakdowns. You get oil changes and tune-ups for your cars, you sharpen the lawn mower blades, you touch up those gray…{ahem}…well, you get the idea. You should also get regular maintenance checks for your air conditioning.

Annual maintenance can save you as much as 85 percent on costly future repairs. That’s what I found out about air conditioning repairs from Sherlock Heating & Air Conditioning. It never hurts to get a professional’s insight.

Yeah, so?

There is a host of good reasons why you want your AC running at peak efficiency, let’s examine just a few.

  • Personal Comfort. Why do you have central air? Because at some point it gets way too hot outside and you want a cool refuge. Probably not a huge ice castle like Superman’s "Fortress of Solitude" but somewhere you can kick back and relax and stop sweating for a minute. Everybody has a different tolerance level, but I think most people would agree that when the thermometer nears triple digits, and the humidity hits tropical levels, a nice cool spot is juuuust right.

  • Energy efficiency. Better efficiency means lower electric bills during AC season. There are several things one can do to make an air conditioning unit run more efficiently. Beyond what peak efficiency can do for your bank account, it can also help reduce your carbon footprint. It’s always a bonus when one action covers multiple goals.

  • Increased home value. Air conditioning is one of those things that has a direct impact on the "market value" of your home. While some items in your home can have an impact on a home’s value, a working air conditioning system will have an impact on value. People want to be comfortable within the confines of their personal castles, and all other things being equal, are more than willing to pay for it.

Hitting it out of the park!

I’ll concede that having your air conditioning break down is a "first-world problem" as they say in the vernacular. But let’s face it, we live in the "first world" and it’s one problem more easily taken away from our other burdens. To recap, air conditioners that run at the best possible efficiency can save you money, take away at least one rock from the mountain called environmental pollution and can keep you personally more comfortable. A solid triple in baseball parlance.

But maybe we can turn that triple into a home run. Using strictly anecdotal "evidence" from my personal experiences and those of my friends, there may be some health benefits to an efficient AC system. Things like diabetes, MS or even limited mobility from chronic pain can be helped by air conditioning. When your body has turned against you in some way, sitting in a house turned sauna can be distressing and can tax your body physically and psychologically.

Lack of, or poorly working, air conditioning can cause an increase in body temperature, uncomfortable sweating, and even difficulty breathing. Combine these with chronic issues like extreme pain, and they can take a person’s normal discomfort and not just multiply it, but raise it exponentially.

So the next time mom or dad, or grandma or grandpa, seem more cranky than normal in the summer months, maybe you can consider if their air conditioning system is doing all it can to keep them comfortable.
