Planning and being prepared are critical items for your business development if you are going to build a sustainable mortgage practice. It’s why I focus so much on business planning and using that business plan to keep my clients on track and ahead of the curve.

Being prepared is knowing in advance of the situations you need to be in control of, BEFORE those situations arrive. While you can’t always prepare for everything, the calendar is something that is very simple to control if you plan to be out in front of it.

So, what do I mean by this? As of Friday we were 8 days away from July 4th. This year it falls on a Friday. While that may seem obvious, you must look at this and ask yourself the following questions:

1.  Who is planning on being away for the holiday?
2.  When are people planning to leave?
3.  What time am I planning on taking off?
4.  Who is covering for me or my team while I am gone?
5.  Which of my referral partners are out and who is covering them?
6.  Are my clients and referral partners aware of my availability?

This information is critical. Being prepared and helping prepare those around you shows a higher degree of professionalism. It shows that regardless of the situation, you have a plan on how to deal with whatever situation may occur! It also opens the door to opportunities when others drop the ball!

You also need to remember that some people look at the calendar and see next Friday is July 4th and figure nothing will be getting done, so they start their holiday on Friday June 27th with plans on not returning until Monday July the 7th! This could be really important information for you to think about, for you, your team, your referral partners, and most of all, your clients!
