Air conditioners are prone to problems like everything else. These issues can be of varying degrees and so can their respective solutions. It is essential, therefore, to identify the problem and know how to fix it. To make things simpler, we’ve decided to help you out with some common problems and what to do about them.

Refrigeration Leaks

The most common sign you’ve got a refrigerant leak in your system is a drop in cooling efficiency. Although there could be other causes for the same problem, a leaking refrigerant is one of the most likely. Refrigerants are harmful to the environment because of the chemicals they contain. It is essential to have a technician come over and check your system if you suspect something like this is afoot. The technician is equipped with the necessary tools to ascertain if there is indeed a leak or some other problem.

Drainage Problem

Air conditioners condense outside air to make it cooler. The byproduct of this process is water expelled from the unit through pipes. These pipes can at times become clogged, resulting in your air conditioner cooling efficiency to drop. This can also have an impact on energy consumption. Sometimes, this problem is only caused because the container you used to store the expelled water is full and therefore blocking the pipe. In such a case, you can quickly fix the problem by emptying the tank. In other instances, the pipes might be blocked due to debris, etc. Here, you’ll have to call a professional serviceman to look into the problem for you.

Electrical Failure

A complete shutdown of the system or some functions being disabled can be a clear indication of electrical failure in your system or wiring. Electrical malfunctions require a technician to come over and determine the extent of the problem, because you might have to replace the entire system depending on how significant the failure.

Rooms are not being cooled adequately

As we hinted at earlier, there might be several reasons why the air conditioner is not cooling the room adequately. These can range from dirty air filters to refrigerant leaks in the system. Depending on the cause, the solutions also vary from DIY to calling in a technician.

Dirty or damaged air filters can easily be cleaned or replaced

Other problems like cool air leaking out through cracks in the walls and window seals, too much sunlight pouring into the room or something placed right in front of the outer fan blocking the air are all DIY jobs. If these measures don’t fix the leak, you’ll have it call in a technician to help you sort it out.

Faulty Sensors

Sensors are usually located in thermostats. The detect and alter the temperature of the system. If your system fails to adjust, it means something is wrong. You will need a professional repairer to look and rectify this issue for you.

Ice Buildup on the coils

Improper ventilation for the system to operate or refrigerant leaks are possible causes of ice buildup inside the unit. This is another problem that must be dealt with by a professional.

Blowing warm air

This could mean a host of different things. Warm air could signal that the refrigerant has run out, that the filters are blocked, or possibly that something is blocking you AC’s external unit. Besides a refrigerant leak, other problems can be sorted out efficiently by either replacing the filters or removing anything hindering the ventilation for your system.

Faulty wiring

Smell something burning? It might be signals of faulty wiring that has overheated due to extensive electrical load on it. If you’re a practical person who knows electrical repair work, you can identify and replace the damaged wiring on your own. Otherwise, it is highly recommended you hire a technician to look into the issue for you.

Unit won’t turn on

You might want to check the switch to make sure the power is on! Alternatively, check your thermostat to determine it is on the correct setting because sometimes the condenser fails to come on due to incorrect settings. In case none of the above solutions fixes the problem, contact a professional repairer to have the issue examined.

Water dripping from the inner unit

A blocked drainage pipe is a possible cause of water dripping from the inner unit of an AC. Dripping water doesn’t affect the efficiency. However, it causes severe inconvenience since everything under the unit gets wet. It can also increase your water bill. Water leaks can be fixed easily by identifying the clog and removing it from the pipe.
