A roof needs ultimate care because the roof is directly exposed to the hot sun in summer, snow in winter or a lot of moisture in the rainy season. As it is exposed to the extreme weather conditions, the possibility of damage is higher in case of roof compared to the other structural elements of a house. To maintain your roof in service condition, you need to check the roof for damage or irregularities for once in six months or 12 months. You should bring some consultant for inspection but you should know that bring someone to inspect may increase the cost. So, it is better to learn some basic techniques for a roof inspection. If you know these basic techniques, you will be able to inspect your roof by yourself and this will save a lot of money in the end. Moreover, you will have a satisfaction that you are taking proper care and there is no point is missing in an inspection.

Checklist for Roof Inspection:

1. Check for any irregularities, for example, bump in shingle lines, rust(in case of metal), divots or deviation in the alignment of the roof materials. Primary detection of such problems will help you to replace or repair that specific part and will reduce cost substantially.

  • 2. Check your roof any water leakage. You can notice such leaks in the rainy season or by pouring water on the roof. If you find any leakage, repair them instantly by using the sealants available in the market if the leakage is small. In case of big leakage, you can replace a specific portion of the roof and replace them with a new layer of shingles.
  • 3. There may have some worn or missing shingles in the roof. You should notice these types of problem early to reduce the cost and repair them instantly. Otherwise, it may lead to costly replace in the future.
  • 4. Check the gas vents that come out through roofs from kitchen room or washroom. Check whether gas vents are functioning and rubber seals are installed in a proper manner. If irregularities or damage found, replace or repair them instantly. Repairing/replacing of these things are easy and you can do that.
  • 5. Clean any presence of debris, algae, moss or plant roots that may grow in the roof. These things help in damaging the roof earlier than its original life cycle.

Inspecting the roof regularly is important. You should plan some time to check your roof. The best way to plan to inspect the roof is to set a specific date on Google calendar so that you do not forget to check the roof. Checking roof regularly will save your cost in the long term and will keep the roof usable for a long time.
