Planning to have a long or short term vacation? That's great. Before going to a vacation, a lot of works to be done and taking care of the plumbing you have in your house in one of the most important of them all. Why am I saying that taking care of plumbing and related fixtures are important? There are several reasons including to prevent waste of water, to prevent any sudden accidents, etc. But the questions arise, "how to prepare your plumbing for a vacation?"

There are several ways to prepare your plumbing for a vacation. I am going to mention the most important checklists.

Shut off the main water supply valve or switch

Shutting is important! Yes, when you are going for a vacation either it is short or long, shutting off the main water supply would be the main task you need to do. This will prevent water flowing through any fixtures in your house and may save you a good amount of bucks. Consider a situation, you are not at home and your area has been struck by an 'Earthquake'. Your home's plumbing may gather some crack and tons of water could be easily be gone as a waste. Shutting off the main valve or switch prevents your water meter from running 24 hours and helps you keep your sweet home safe.

Check your appliances, sewers and water valves

Before leaving home for sweet vacation, check all your water appliances and valves. Water appliances like washing machine, heater, bathtub and fixtures like the kitchen sink, taps, toilet, etc. should be thoroughly checked and make sure they are in good condition. Turning ON of some fixtures may be a necessity. for example, you can turn on your water heater to prevent water from being frozen. But keep in mind, you should not keep something on that is not necessary. Checking the internal home sewers is also important, as it is within the home and can cause flooding and substantial loss if not properly taken care of.

Check for leaks

There may have leaks or broken fixtures. Maybe you have seen but did not pay any heed as it is not causing any serious harm. But you do not know what would be the situation if you are not at home. A broken or leaking fixture is more prone to disaster if it faces a natural disaster like an earthquake. So before leaving home, make sure you checked all of the valves and fixtures; repaired them if they are not OK.

But, the question is how can do all of these things? I would like to suggest you call an expert. The reason is simple, maybe you are not as good as like a professional. And for doing delicate things like plumbing, you should not rely on amateur hands.

So, before enjoying your vacation, make sure you are leaving your home in a great condition by checking, maintaining all of the safety precautions for plumbing.
